Dr. Kelen Almeida Dornelles is currently Associate Professor at Institute of Architecture and Urbanism (IAU) from the University of Sao Paulo (USP), in Sao Carlos (SP), Brazil. She was Visiting Professor at University of Perugia, Italy, at CIRIAF Research Center in 2020, and visiting scholar in several international universities and research centers. She is member of the teaching board of the Post-Graduation Program in Architecture and Urbanism at IAU-USP in the field of Design, Innovation and Sustainability where she has been advisor of several Master and PhD students and lecturer of Architecture and Climate in the Built Environment.
She is part of scientific boards of several national and international conferences, and has activities as referee of national and international journals. Author of more than 70 papers including international and national refereed journals and conferences. She won seven academic awards and has been coordinating more than 10 research projects in Brazil.
Her research interests cover two main directions: thermal performance of materials for building envelope, including thermo-physics characterization, and indoor-outdoor microclimate for environmental comfort and energy saving, with attention to strategies to mitigate urban heat island phenomenon (mainly cool roofs and walls). Under the framework of these two main themes, she investigates thermal-energy performance of different solutions for building envelope, new analysis methods for estimating the effect of innovative strategies; high albedo solutions for passive cooling and as mitigation strategy against urban heat island phenomenon; local climate boundary conditions affecting building thermal-energy behavior; indoor-outdoor microclimate analysis.
